Why the Lib Dems had no choice

A lot of people have been upset by the recent coalition formed by the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative party, in the wake of the hung parliament that resulted after the recent election. The Liberal Democrats have been accused of betraying their voters and becoming another wing of the Tories.

As far as I see it, the Lib Dems really had no choice. A Lab-Lib coalition seemed unlikely. Labour did not have the highest number of seats in Parliament and even if they joined with the Liberal Democrats, they would still need other smaller parties to join with them. This could lead to problems such as blackmail.

The Lib Dems could have withdrawn completely from the whole thing, left the Conservatives to govern as a minority government and watched the result. But why would they do that? Even though they lost the election, Labour still control a good deal of the U.K and are the opposition party. They are likely to end up back in government someday. On the other hand, the Lib Dems won a small amount of seats and would probably have to slink off to lick their wounds. By forming a coalition with the Conservatives, it is likely to be the closest the Liberal Democrats ever get to being in government. Nick Clegg is now deputy Prime Minister, seeing as he could have ended up being replaced as the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, this is a big step forward. There are also Lib Dem M.P's in the Cabinet and they have a say on policy.

People seem to believe that the Conservatives will have an effect on the Liberal Democrats, but why shouldn't the Liberal Democrats have an effect on the Tories? Plus, the whole situation gives the Lib Dems a chance to show what they can do when they are in power.

I am not a political commentator and write this blog based only on what I see and read in the media. But, personally I believe the Liberal Democrat party made the best decision in joining together with the Conservatives to govern Britain.
